Top 5 Medical Technology Innovations Top 5 Medical Technology Innovations Top 5 Medical Technology InnovationsAgainst the backdrop of health care reform and a controversial medical device tax, medical technology companies are focusing more than ever on products that deliver cheaper, faster, more efficient patient care. They are also making inroads with U.S. Food Drug Administration regulators to re-engineer the complex review and approval process for new medical devices.Just for You in 2019Six Lean Principles for an Industry 4.0 WorldMany in the industry have long felt overly burdened by what they consider to be an unnecessarily complex approval process. Critics claim it impedes innovation and delays the availability of better health care. To change that perception, the FDA last year announced a new Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC) charged with simplifying the process of designing and testing new technologies. With input from industry, government, and other nonprofit orga nizations, public-private MDIC will prioritize the regulatory science needs of the medical device community and fund projects to streamline the process.More in BioengineeringThe Engineering Behind Brain ResearchBy sharing and leveraging resources, MDIC may help industry to be better equipped to bring safe and effective medical devices to market more quickly and at a lower cost, says Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of the FDAs Center for Devices and Radiological Health.Thought leaders agree that todays best technologies strike a balance between reducing the overall cost of medical care and increasing safety and survival rates. As the regulators, politicians, and corporate executives hash out these details, industry engineers and scientists continue to push through new ideas for improving and managing human health. Doctors have long associated the most severe, chronic forms of headache with the sphenopalatine gangl ion (SPG), a facial nerve bundle, but havent yet found a treatment that works on the SPG long-term. A technology under clinical investigation at Autonomic Technologies, Inc., (Redwood City, CA) is a patient-powered tool for blocking SPG signals at the first sign of a headache. The system involves the permanent implant of a small nerve stimulating device in the upper gum on the side of the head normally affected by headache. The lead tip of the implant connects with the SPG bundle, and when a patient senses the onset of a headache, he or she places a handheld remote controller on the cheek nearest the implant. The resulting signals stimulate the SPG nerves and block the pain-causing neurotransmitters. The Symphony tCGM biosensor from Echo Therapeutics. Image EchoTX.com3. But theres new skin in this game. Echo Therapeutics (Philadelphia, PA) is developing technologies that would replace the poke with a patch. The company is working on a transdermal biosensor that reads blood analytes through the skin without drawing blood. The technology involves a handheld electric-toothbrush-like device that removes just enough top-layer skin cells to put the patients blood chemistry within signal range of a patch-borne biosensor. The sensor collects one reading per minute and sends the data wirelessly to a remote monitor, triggering audible alarms when levels go out of the patients optimal range and tracking glucose levels over time. The Telemedicine System from InTouch Technologies. Bill Gates compared Steve Jobs to a wizard that casts spells on people

Bill Gates compared Steve Jobs to a wizard that casts spells on peopleBill Gates compared Steve Jobs to a wizard that casts spells on peopleThis past Sunday, perhaps the two most saluted business magnates in the world made headlines after the surviving one made supposedly wounding remarks regarding the merits of the others legacy. This isnt the first time this year even, that comments attributed to Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, were largely hyperbolized in service of the mythologized tech circus. This isnt to say Gates summation of the late Steve Jobs to CNNs Fareed Zakaria welches all cherries and roses either. The principles of leadershipBesides being a well-crafted, technically sound movie, we love David Finchers The Social Network because its fun to imagine that the dweebs that drafted the blueprint for how the entire world spends its every waking second (or used to, at least), were mora akin Shakespearean cheerleaders forever at each others throats, making backdoor deals and sel ling our Social Security numbers to the Illuminati. Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAt one point during Zakarias GPS special, Gates referred to Jobs as an ahole. There are more than enough demo fail videos, testimonials and uncomfortable anecdotes floating around to spare this slight from a trial, though I doubt very much that its character was nearly as compelling as the Machiavellian madman too preoccupied with changing the world to be bothered by things like courtesy and raising a daughter or whatever, as depicted in the unintentionally hilarious Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher, and then again in the intensely quippy Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender and penned by Aaron Sorkin. The same inclination that makes us uneasy to accept Mark Zuckerberg, as a smart, dad jeans-wearing dork, or Jobs as a smart turtleneck wearing ahole, begs us to read more into Gates barbs than was actually present. The wizarding world of Steve JobsStarting with the bit thats currently headlining the media circuit towards the backend of the chat, Gates likened he and Jobs to wizards, unfavorably adding that the latter had the world (barring himself) under some sort of hypnotic enchantment. Even before I had watched the televised interview and only read the transcript, the comment struck me as a broad reference to the famous Arthur C. Clarke quote, more specifically his third law. I could be wrong, of course, but even still the sharpest aspects of this analogy were meant to be somewhat comical. As a vivid allusion to Jobs near superpower of picking talent, hyper motivating that talent, and having a sense of design, Gates playfully said it was like he was casting spells. As something of a minor wizard himself, he recalled being deaf to the late investors charisma illusions, even while acknowledging the sheer power of them. When he did the NeXT introduction, which is a computer t hat completely failed, it was such nonsense and yet he mesmerized those people. Gates continues, Wait a minute that spell should not work at all, it doesnt have any reality to it.The actual nutrients of Gates sit down with CNN didnt come in the form of his account of he and Jobs amplified rivalry, but rather in his sober estimation of what it takes to effectively light an enterprise to the finish line and beyond the principles of leadership. Gates isnt an entrepreneur. There isnt a throughline between the influence of Microsoft and the guy behind a successful chain of restaurants. The consistency and continuity that defines Apple and Microsoft are energized by passion and non-material objectives. The dedication to behauptung principles at times made both founders at times unpleasant men. Gates, by his own admission, allowed the intensity of his expectations and goals to go too far occasionally, concerning the pressure placed upon his staff. He imagined the same odds were true of Job s, concluding to Zakaria Its really easy to imitate the bad parts of Steve. He brought some incredibly positive things along with that toughness Steve is a very singular case, where the company really was on a path to die and it goes and becomes the most valuable company in the world with products that are really amazing. There wont be many stories like that.Unfortunately, Jobs was deprived of the opportunity for his aims to advance, though history suggests the process to be, if not inevitable-encouraged by time. These days, a Gates cameo in the news more often than not owes itself to the philanthropy practiced by him and his wife, Melinda. In a recent blog post, the humanitarian blushed to remember how rigid and limited his aspirations were in his early to mid-twenties. Back then, an end-of-year assessment would amount to just one question Is Microsoft software making the personal-computing dream come true? Gates wrote. He went on to index the way these measures have evolved into his sixties How many new things have I learned today? Did I develop new friendships or deepen old ones? Did I devote enough time to my family? These questions would have been laughable to me when I was 25, but as I get older, they are much more meaningful.

Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines

Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines Alternative energy sources are making an impact in the U.S., and wind power is becoming a bigger player in electricity production. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind turbines accounted for 30 percent of new generating capacity over the past five years. That has come from land-based units, primarily in the interior of the country. But offshore wind turbines are poised for growth, and the industry expects them to move farther offshore, in deep water that requires floating platforms. For now, only a handful of floating wind turbines have been installed around the world and designers have moved on developing new modeling tools to ensure their integrity and stability. Its a progression from known to more difficult and future concepts, says Walter Musial, principle engineer at the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Go lden, CO. Were building on land-based turbine modeling tools. We had simulation tools to predict wind turbine performance as long as the base wasnt moving. For shallow waters of 40 meters or less, wind turbines can be economically installed on a variety of firm foundations fixed to the ocean floor. Going deeper requires floating platforms loosely anchored to the seabed with chains. Oil and gas producers have built very large tension-leg platforms and other designs for drilling and processing but wind turbines present different issues. For a 6-MW machine, a platform must maintain stability while supporting a tower reaching 80 meters and topped with a nacelle and rotor weighing 350 tonnes or more.VolturnUS is the first grid-connected offshore wind turbine in the Americas. Image Advanced Structures and Composites Center That all adds complexity, says Habib Dagher, director of the University of Maines Advanced Structures and Composite Center and leader of DeepCwind, a commercial consort ium to develop a floating wind farm off the coast of Maine. In 2013, the consortium successfully built, floated, and tested a 18 pilot model of a 6-MW wind turbine off of Castile, ME. We had to couple wave loading and hydrodynamics with structural and aerodynamic forces. To move forward, engineers must verify and validate the work in putting together new platform designs, and those designs are elend uniform. In Norway, energy giant Statoil began testing a 2.3-MW wind turbine in the North Sea, using a spar platform. A spar is a cylindrical buoy-type platform filled with ballast ad extending deep beneath the waves for stability. An advanced spar design is also being used off Fukushima, Japan, serving as the platform for a floating electrical substation in the first stages what could be a 1,000-MW wind farm. Daghers group uses a three-column semisubmersible platform made of prestressed concrete with a lightweight composite tower. Seattle-based Principal Power has partnered with energy developer DeepWind to bring Principal Powers WindFloat design to the U.S. West Coast. The WindFloat design uses three steel columns tied together with steel truss members. The turbine tower is attached to one of the columns, all of which are fitted with a large water entrapment plate at the base to provide stability. In addition, the hulls trim optimization ordnungsprinzip uses instruments and sensors to measure ocean currents, wind direction and speed and other data, all of which are relayed to a control system that pumps ballast water among the columns to maintain stability. NREL took its first step toward verifying and validating floating structures with its OC3 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration 3) project, addressing the need to verify modeling tools, using a Statoil-designed spar as a subject. That was followed by OC4, which analyzed a 5-MW wind turbine attached to a semisubmersible platform using DeepCwinds design. Compared to the spar, the semisubmersible offered greate r hydrodynamic complexity. Its a progression from known to more difficult and future concepts, says Musial. NREL now is beginning work on OC5, which Musial calls a validation phase. We had to make sure design tools for all wind systems were verified, he says, and there was confidence in simulation tools. ASME, which is working to develop standards for verification and validation, considers verification as the process of determining that a computational model accurately represents the underlying mathematical model and its solution. Validation is the process of determining the degree to which a model is an accurate representation of the real world from the perspective of the intended uses of the model. NRELs work builds on its FAST model, which the laboratory describes as joining aerodynamics models, hydrodynamics models for offshore structures, control and electrical system (servo) dynamics models, and structural (elastic) dynamics models to enable coupled nonlinear aero-hydro-servo- elastic simulation in the time domain. But FAST is not the only model. Dagher says his group used and modified FAST, together with four in-house and commercial modeling tools in developing their platform. They also worked with 150 scaled platforms and turbines in basin tests before building the 18 scale model. During a year of testing, the group gathered a large amount of data gathered from instruments and sensors that measured ocean currents, waves, wind direction and speed, acceleration, forces of thrust on the turbine, and other items. Our ability to model is no longer an issue, he says. We took that data and compared it to our modelsand our ability to predict is no longer a concern. Still, more work is coming as the wind industry grows. Although not specifically tied to offshore production, DOE is beginning a research initiative called Atmosphere to Electrons, or Ae2, toward more formal procedures for verification and validation procedures. One NREL engineer says researchers wil l likely consider more quantitative approaches in the future. Learn more at ASMEs 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium in Las Vegas, NV. Investing money for beginners What you need to know first

Investing money for beginners What you need to know first Investing money for beginners What you need to know first As you start saving and building a financial foundation, you’ll need to start investing that money.  If you really want to obtain wealth and secure a solid nest-egg, investing your money is crucial. And most people understand that investing their money is smart and valuable to their future plans of retiring. However, there is no definite class in the education system called “Investing Money for Beginners.”  Least, not something I’m aware of currently.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  But, you can learn how to do the basics on your own and learn how to put your money to work for you while you sleep.Even if you might be intimidated by investing money or scared to lose it all, it’s important to not let all your money just sit on the sidelines. Before you dive into any sort of investing, there are some important items you need to know first before doing anything.  These are not tips for how to get started, more of a checklist of things to understand. You should have money saved first that’s not for investingYou never want to go all in with investing money, even if you think it’s foolproof (nothing is!). This means, you should have a nice cash reserve set aside in your bank account, preferably a mix of your checking and savings. This is what you’d call an  emergency fund  or your “rainy day” fund.  Build these up first, typically 3-6 months of expenses (I aimed for 6 â€" 12 months), before considering investing.Of course, if your company offers a 401k, take advantage of the company match.  But outside of that, save your money first before doing any additional investing.Get your investing literacy onI’d say a key component to investing money for beginners is to educate yourself on investing.  It doesn’t mean you need to be the next  Warren Buffett, but you should understand how investing works.Start learning about investing money, common  investing terms, what to look for, how the stock market works, etc.  There is a lot of information out there, but if you start to slowly digest it you’ll see that’s it’s not overly complicated. This does mean spending some time reading books and other trusted publications a bit each week.  But if you have no background at all with investing money, this is probably the most important item.Pay off high interest debt beforeAgain, if your company offers a 401k with a match, still take advantage of that.  But before investing any money, take care of any high interest debt, like credit cards. Many credit cards have 20%+ interest rates, which no investment will beat.  Instead of pro-longing this debt and trying to invest, just knock it out. You’ll feel better having taken care of this debt, you’ll still have your 401k started, and then you’ll have more money to save (or for future investments) since you won’t have any high interest eating your cash.Only risk what won’t crush your financesIf you recall from early in this post, I mention about building a savings foundation first that is not used for investing.  However, even the money you use after that for investing, you still want to understand your risk.If something were to go bad with your investments or the economy, what can you afford to lose without being decimated financially?    This is important because you never want to risk putting all your cash in investments.Instead you want to be calculated with your investment strategy.  It’s okay to be on the aggressive side if that’s your path, but understand the stakes and ensure you won’t be left with nothing if something happens.Getting rich overnight should not be your priority for investingWe all want to get rich overnight.  Can you imagine?  Ah, how exciting life would be!However, it is the wrong mentality to have when you are investing money.  Sure, sometimes a big investing win can happen, but it’s rare. How do you think Warren Buffett bec ame a multi-billionaire?  Besides being smart, he was patience and approached investing money with the long-term mentality. The “get rich fast” mindset is typically why people end up losing a lot, or most of their money. Many seasoned investors understand this, but many beginners to investing see dollars way too quickly. It’s okay to make small investing mistakesEven the best investors in the world make mistakes from time to time.  The goal is to ensure they are only small mistakes, which provide great learning opportunities and lessons. If you’d look back at my Vanguard snapshot from 2014-2016, it was all over the place and there were some mistakes I made which cost me money.Did it make me broke?  Nope.  Was I stressing when I lost some of my investment?  Nope.  Why?Because I didn’t go all in on something I was still learning about.  These mistakes were all a great education for me, which helped when I had more money to invest.Understand why you want to investI think its alwa ys important to know why you want to invest your money.  Essentially, write down some goals for yourself that might be in 5, 10, 25 years. This helps you visualize why you’re investing, helps you make better decisions when it comes to what to invest in, and helps keep you on track. Before I started (besides my 401k) a few years back, I wrote down what I wanted to accomplish and why investing in particular assets was important to my finances. While it may not have guided every decision, it was helpful to know before dropping any money. It was also helpful for making adjustments to my 401k and the amount I contributed.  Don’t underestimate the simple power of goals and planning for investing. Some additional tips for investing beginnersWhile the above are things to know before investing you money, there are additional tips as you get started as well.  Keep these in mind as you get started.Consistently Contribute  Ã¢€" Stick to a consistent investing schedule, even when the market is up or down.  This is called dollar-cost averaging and when compounded overtime, it will ensure your investments average out well in the future.Spot investing fees  Ã¢€" When choosing your investment platforms or working with a bank for a loan, always be mindful of the fees.  Choose financial platforms with low fees and negotiate bank fees as best you can.  Even a small percentage can impact your future investments by a significant portion.Diversification is your friend  Ã¢€" Kind of like not going all in with your money, you shouldn’t go all in on one particular asset either.  Diversifying your assets will help your ride out rough markets better and help protect your money in the long run.Don’t monitor your investments daily  Ã¢€" If you aren’t becoming a day trader or financial advisor, you should not be looking at your investments daily.  It will drive you nuts, play with your emotions, and cause you to make hasty decisions based on the market that day.  Of course, you want to che ck in once and awhile, but keep it limited.  Starting out, you may want to start at 1x month or less. This article originally appeared on Invested Wallet.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Elevator Pitch I gave one in an elevator, and it workedsort of

Elevator Pitch I gave one in an elevator, and it workedâ€"sort of Elevator Pitch I gave one in an elevator, and it worked- sort of I like to tell people that I once gave  an elevator pitch in an elevator, and I got the job.Except, of course, it wasn’t that simple at all.I was intern at the U.S. State Department when I happened to get onto an elevator with one of the editors of the State Department’s website. We started talking, and I told her about myself - journalism student, double major in international studies, interested in writing.Stop the story when the elevator doors opened, and it looks like a classic example of the old-fashioned idea of carrying around a 60-second story of self-promotion. But, in reality, that elevator ride was just the start of an ongoing conversation that ultimately led to me writing for the website.Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about that experience and how to make a good first impression. What’s the best way to start a conversation? How do I describe to someone what I do? Can I sell myself without seeming to brag or causing someone’s eyes to glaze over?Should I prepar e an elevator pitch?“The elevator speech is dead,” Sam Horn, the founder and CEO of the Intrigue Agency and author of Got Your Attention?: How to Create Intrigue and Connect, told me. “Do you know anyone who likes listening to a speech? It’s one-way communication.”In a world filled with what Horn calls “infobesity,” or “information that goes in one ear and out the other,” the outdated tactic of presenting a laundry list of positions and accomplishments won’t help job seekers and networkers cut through the noise, Horn said.“We don’t want to get lost in the crowd,” she said. “Our goal is to pleasantly surprise decision makers with relevant examples that speak directly to their needs and priorities.”What should we do instead? When people ask what you do, don’t tell them, Horn said. It may sound counterintuitive, but stating your job title or listing  your responsibilities only serves to end the conversation- and risks having people tune you out. This is e specially true for those who are currently unemployed or looking for a change.Instead, offer specific examples that show  how you have provided value or made a difference in your past experiences, Horn said. Answer the question: “What are the results of what you do that we can see or smell or taste or touch?”And then ask questions to help listeners relate to your role. Two great ways to engage in conversations are to ask questions that start with “have you ever” and “did you know,” Horn said. Now, when I think back to that elevator ride at the start of my career, I have to acknowledge that the only thing that made my summary an “elevator pitch” was its locale. The real magic  came from what happened next: a meaningful conversation in which I gave examples of the writing I’d done and asked thoughtful questions. How does this help me today?I may not be able to tell that story in quite the same way again, but at least now I know what not to do the next time I go to a net working event - or get in an elevator.

An Early and Instant Check for Breast Cancer

An Early and Instant Check for Breast Cancer An Early and Instant Check for Breast Cancer An Early and Instant Check for Breast Cancer Breast cancer can best be treated when its detected early. But the equipment doctors use to detect and monitor suspicious lesions on the breast is invasive, large, and expensive. But that could change as Jana Kainerstorfer, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and doctoral student Constance Robbins continue to develop a hand-held device to noninvasively check how lesions change over time. The goal is to develop an inexpensive, noninvasive, yet quantitative monitor of the physical and physiological characteristics of a breast lump that could be used in both the doctors office and by the woman at home, Kainerstorfer says. The researchers created a device that uses near-infrared light to optically image the tissues. Malignant tumors contain greater water concentration and less lipid concentration than surrounding tissue and [have] a high concentration of blood vessels, Kainerstorfer says. These changes can be monitored optically, based on near-infrared light interaction with tissue. Heres another innovative method researchers are using to detect cancer. Adding optical imagery expanded the work of James Antaki, a professor of biomedical engineering, and Molly Blank, a 2016 Carnegie Mellon graduate now at the University of Washingtons department of bioengineering. Blanks hand-held device compared a lesion to the surrounding tissue, creating a topographic image that can be examined for the size, shape, stiffness, and location of the deformation. We demonstrated that we can image lesions, even deep inside the phantoms when compression was applied. That was proof of concept. Prof. Jana Kainerstorfer, Carnegie Mellon University The system can send the near-infrared images to a smartphone. Image: Carnegie Melon. Carnegie Mellons researchers developed spatial frequency domain imaging, which offered two-dimensional images in an inexpensive, portable system. The light source is a projector and the camera can be a cellphone camera, [so] the depth penetration is limited to the superficial tissue layers, Kainerstorfer says. [However], we are compressing tissue such that the imaging depth does not create an obstacle. The optical innovation was important for younger women who have denser breast tissue. The researchers developed breast cancer mimicking models (optical phantoms) to display the effectiveness of the imaging. The researchers settled on flexible polydimethylsiloxane with ink and titanium dioxide standing in as scattering and absorption agents. We demonstrated that we can image lesions, even deep inside the phantoms when compression was applied, Kainerstorfer says. That was proof of concept. The team plans to test the device on humans sometime in the next six months. Neil Cohen is an independent writer. For Further Discussion

Moving Hot Fluids Through Solar Troughs

Moving Hot Fluids Through Solar Troughs Moving Hot Fluids Through Solar Troughs Look at a utility-scale concentrated solar power (CSP) parabolic trough power plant and youll see a maze of piping. Most of it is standard, insulated stainless steel, transporting high-temperature heat transfer fluid (HTF) from the solar field, where it is heated to thermodynamic power cycle components to produce electricity. Constantly circulated and monitored, HTF flow is critical for the plants efficiency. What is unusual about piping HTF in a CSP plant is the connections to the heat collection elements (HCEs) mounted at the focal line of the parabolic troughs, known as solar collector assemblies (SCAs). These connections must accommodate both sun-tracking movements and expansion and contraction caused by fluid with a temperature that can reach as high as 400 C. There are three locations where HTF connections can be made to SCAs: header connections between fixed hot or cold header piping and the ends of long rows of multiple SCAs interconnections between two adjacent SCAs, allowing troughs to independently rotate as they track the sun interconnections between the ends of each row of SCAs, connecting nearby rows together. There is no single accepted hardware solution or design approach, as several technologies are used in many different trough and support designs. The biggest piping challenge in HTF loops (out and back through long rows of SCAs) has been the quality of the connections: maintainability, reliability, and lifetime. Better hardware and new configurations are providing improved connection options, and as systems trend towards larger dimensions, new applications of traditional connectors are helping as well. Improving Early Connections Early plants in the 1980s used single-insulated, corrugated, flexible, stainless steel hoses as interconnects and header connects. Fatigue failures manifesting as small cracks developed in some of the hoses, leaking HTF. Some plants used single or double implementations of flexible hoses in one area and ball joint assemblies in others.Hot fluid leaks not only reduce system performance by changing the fluid pressure, but they increase the risk of insulation fires or auto-ignition. With risk of fire, high operation costs, and the necessity for large numbers of replacement parts, some pursued other options while improvements to flex hoses were developed. Ball joint assemblies, which have graphite seals and both rotation and angular deflection capabilities, were chosen by those with flex hose issues. Many suppliers and spare parts were available, and seal maintenance after thousands of hours of use resulted in lower maintenance costs. Plants that adopted ball joint assemblies also experienced a significant reduction in pressure drop, requiring less power to circulate fluid through the loops, resulting in more power to the grid. A study indicated that switching to ball joints made larger plant sizes more feasible. For almost a decade, ball joints were the best technology available, but during that time, development on improved flexible hoses continued, resulting in hoses with multiple layers and thermally insulated stainless steel braiding. This resulted in improved reliability, making flexible hoses once again a viable option. Some plants used single or double implementations of flexible hoses in one area and ball joint assemblies in others. Scaling Up: Separating Motions The industry is trending toward longer troughs with larger HCEs and reduced space between SCAs. According to one trough designer, as trough sizes increase, the heavier, larger diameter ball joints they require are more difficult to seal and make larger collectors harder to control, which may limit their use. Beyond a certain collector size, long, flexible hoses bend under their own weight, becoming difficult to control. Also, more linear expansion along the line of the collector increases the possibility for twisting, which is unacceptable for a hose in flexure. This has resulted in next-generation flexible hose connection systems that now combine corrugated flex hoses with swivel joints that can absorb both the rotations of the giant troughs and axial motions. According to one manufacturer, compared to ball joint assemblies, these new rotation flex hose systems impart less force into HCE tubes, have fewer seal points, and require less maintenance. They can also be installed in double u-shaped configurations between SCAs. Currently being used on several platforms, flexible hoses used in combination with rotary joints are viewed as viable options for long-term operation. Expansion joint assemblies are the latest technology being applied and evaluated as interconnects. Different configurations containing one or more metallic bellows mounted on fixed pipes help dampen vibrations and absorb dimensional changes caused by thermal or mechanical movements such as axial extension and compression, lateral movements, or angular rotation. As with most developing fields, the technologies used in parabolic CSP are evolving over time. Manufacturers will be providing the best solutions at the best prices with hopes of providing high volumes of connectors to the expanding amount of commercial projects in this area. Debbie Sniderman is CEO of VI Ventures LLC, a technical consulting company. There is no single accepted hardware solution or design approach, as several technologies are used in many different trough and support designs.

Autonomous vehicles may change work for millions of people

Autonomous vehicles may change work for millions of people Autonomous vehicles may change work for millions of people It̢۪s rare that anything affects the livelihoods of 9.5 million workers, or the lives of nearly all Americans. But because most of the country relies on some form of transportation, autonomous vehicles and the digital technologies they represent could mean major changes for a large percentage of people living and working in the United States.A recent article by fellows at the Brookings Institution hypothesizes that the impacts of so-called digital mobility will not only touch workers in their immediate path, such as drivers, but also change the job functions of people who design, build and maintain vehicles. But that̢۪s not all: The people who create and preserve environments such as roads and highways will also have to adapt when a driver isn̢۪t behind the wheel.Altogether, the Brookings Institution estimates that 3.9 million drivers, 3.8 million auto support workers and 1.8 million transport support workers will be impacted. That does not mean they̢۪ll be fired, or that their j obs will be retired. But they will have to adapt to a new landscape of transportation, where today̢۪s model has become obsolete.RecommendationsThe Brookings Institution estimates that every state will feel the effects of digital mobility, but states in the Midwest with large manufacturing centers will likely be impacted the most.To anticipate a coming age where autonomous vehicles increasingly become the norm, fellows at the Brookings Institution say a few questions need to be answered. First, experts need to get an idea of what new jobs will be created by autonomous vehicles and general digitalization, and which positions will disappear in coming years because of them. Then, they need to decide what skills workers need in this new economy, so the transition does not lead to instability. And finally, state and local governments need advice on where to focus their development efforts so they can promote opportunity instead of losing jobs.Change does not have to be bad, and inroads i n digitalization do not have to mean that millions of people become unemployed because they̢۪re no longer qualified or necessary. But now is the time to start looking into how companies and the government can address this digital boom, before it̢۪s upon us.

9 Ways to Get Inspired from Your Desk

9 Ways to Get Inspired from Your Desk 9 Ways to Get Inspired from Your Desk Staying constantly motivated at work can be tough when you’re sitting in your office for eight (plus) hours a day. With all that intense and stationary work, it’s no wonder most of us leave the office feeling exhausted and depleted. But it turns out that a few small actions and habits can make all the difference in keeping your energy, creativity, and enthusiasm up. Here are nine ways to get inspired without even getting up from your desk (although, that helps a lot too!).1.  Tidy Up, Tool UpInspired work simply can’t be done in the midst of a mess, so give yourself the clean slate you need (and deserve!) by making sure that your workspace stays organized and uncluttered. Also make sure to invest in the tools you need- those favorite pens, that great planner. Give yourself permission to get anything that helps keep you excited and motivated to work.2. Enhance the ViewSurround your immediate workspace with simple, visual pleasures, like a small print or beautiful calendar. And sk ip the family vacation photos- instead display a picture or item that reminds you of ordinary, everyday happiness. This will help inspire you to make today a great day, rather than leaving you wistful for Spring Break.3.  Start with Something BeautifulBefore you open your email, kick-start your creativity by visiting a favorite website, blog, or Pinterest board (the more visual the better) that makes you feel happy and good.
